A column of BMD-2's in Afghanistan

Boyevaya Mashina Desanta 2 or BMD-2 for short stands for "Combat Vehicle of the Airborne". As the name implicates, it is a light infantry fighting vehicle designed for airborne troops (VDV). It is a modification of BMP-2  built on a smaller and lighter hull and completely new turret. Because of this it can be airdropped using parachutes. It was introduced in 1985, in the middle of Soviet war in Afghanistan. It is an improved version of BMD-1, designed to replace it which it didn't do. It can be found in the game Combat Mission: Afghanistan.
